CHAPTER 17

BAD AT LOVE

SASHA

This has been the longest damn week, and I’m not even the one in the thick of the crisis. Though, I have been here almost every day.

Ian looks like he’s been around the world and back and it’s just barely evening. I don’t want to be the one to remind him that it’s not going to slow down when the sun sets. He’s got another long night with his girl to look forward to.

He shuffles into the kitchen bare chested with a pair of gray sweatpants hanging low on his hips. And once again, his big palms slide across his body until he’s cupping his left pec. He does that a lot.

“Is she asleep?” I ask softly.

As event filled as her first day with Ian was, Rowan has settled in and been super chill. Until today.

Somehow, some way, Rand was able to find her birth certificate and the pediatrician who saw her at the hospital when she was born.

I don’t know how he managed to accomplish that so quickly—unless the guys leaned on him pretty heavily to make shit happen. Not a single one of the guys doesn’t have a valid complaint about Rand slacking, being a general pain in the ass, picking sides, and pushing agendas. If anything, Ian was the one who gave him the least to worry about. Until now.

But Rand managed to come through.

Rowan Styx Scott was born almost nine weeks ago at Bellevue Hospital. Ian Scott was listed on the document as her father. River S. Sullivan was listed as the birth mother.

“Huh?” He looks like he could fall asleep where he stands. “Uh, yeah, for now.”

It’s pointless for me to ask, because the answer is always the same. “Do you want me to make you something to eat?” The bread is already slathered with butter, the cheese sliced thin and stacked ready for assembly. A small crock of tomato bisque warming.

His eyes light up and a smile stretches at his lips, brightening his exhaustion. “Holy fuck, yes.” He steps up and throws his arms around me, squeezing me tightly. Holding me close. Rocking me back and forth in his arms. His lips pressed against my temple.

I could swoon.

I could do the whole knees buckling, heart palpitations, and fluttering belly thing that every single romance book has described in nauseating detail. Except it’s real. At least the fluttering in my belly and the skipping of my heart are. Because, dear sweet baby Jesus, Ian’s warm, muscular arms are squishing me tightly to him. And my nose is tucked against his sternum, right next to that pectoral muscle he’s so fond of cupping. I can’t say that I blame him, it is a glorious muscle.

“I don’t know what I would do without you, Sash. How did I get so lucky, that you take care of me like you do?” He leans away, slotting just enough space between us to stare down into my eyes. And there it is—the wobbling knees. He presses a chaste kiss to my forehead and releases me, trailing his hand along my arm.
